A union man with political aspirations and a knack for the fire service has lost his battle with cancer.

Seventy-six year-old John Yates died September 7 at his home in Upper Cornwall.

At a young age, Yates was an active volunteer in the labour movement in Halifax.

He was employed by the Nova Scotia Nurses Union for 20 years up until 1995.

Yates also ran as an NDP candidate in two federal elections.

He joined the Cornwall & District Fire Department in 1980 and served as chief for 23 years.

Yates was considered hard working, dedicated, stubborn and strong willed to the end.

He is survived by his wife and daughter.

Visitation will be held Wednesday night at the Mahone Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the New Cornwall Baptist Church.

Yates' obituary can be seen here.
